Description:
The members of the Van Kuyck Quartet say, "When approaching a composer, I like to immerse myself in his or her early works in order to understand the evolution of his or her style." This idea was utilized in their previous Mozart album, but this time the theme is Schubert, exploring the maturation process of a single composer. Included are the String Quartet No. 10, which Schubert wrote at the age of 16, and "Death and the Maiden," a work from his untimely final years, when he was 27. The happy No. 10, which would have been played in the living room of an intimate home, and the dark and heartbreaking No. 14, which is full of hardship. Their performances vividly reveal the passage of time Schubert followed from these two works with completely different atmospheres. Naxos Japan
