The Brand New Heavies
Description:
The Brand New Heavies led the Acid Jazz movement along with Young Disciples and Jamiroquai. Originally working without a singer, their 1990 debut album, The Brand New Heavies, featured Jay Ella Ruth on vocals, but the North American version of that album, released in 1991, featured Endia Davenport vocals on the North American version of the album, released in 1991. The song "Never Stop" became a breakout hit in the U.S., reaching #3 on the Billboard R&B charts; it won an MTV Award, and the album spent the majority of its 12-month run on the R&B charts. They also had a great live show. The core members of Andrew Levy, Simon Bartholomew, and Jean Kincaid had been playing together since college and were completely familiar with each other's direction. Shibuya 357, a live recording of Endia Davenport's time with the band, is a complete document of these times that passed so quickly and is the only live work from that period. It contains all of their hit songs such as "Never Stop," "Dream Come True," "Stay This Way," and "Don't Let It Go To Your Head," a record that truly captures the ecstatic joy of the moment. The album was released only in Japan for a very short period of time in the late 90's and is currently priced at abnormally high prices on the used market. The new version to be released on Acid Jazz will be the first time the album has been remastered from the original tapes.
