Tasting Note

The very first cuvée produced by Socré itself from vineyard to bottle, Roncaglie holds a special place in the heart of both the family and wine lovers alike. A “sub-area” of Barbaresco, Roncaglie is sourced from amongst the best plots in the Socré’s 3 hectare holdings surrounding the original farmhouse. Planted to majority clay with a limestone sub-soil, Roncaglie is made from pure Nebbiolo resulting in a powerful yet generous Barbaresco capable of comfortably aging for at least two decades. 93 points

Producer

Socré was founded in 1869 by the great-granfather of the current owners. The name, Socré, means "clog" in Piedmontese, and already existed for the farm from the previous owner. The company has always been wine-oriented, but from 1958 Benedetto Piacentino (father and grandfather of the current owners) started a major organisational change by redesigning the vineyard and increasing the quanitity of Nebbiolo that was grown, keeping a small portion to be specifically used for making wine for the family.

From 1990 the company underwent a new expansion, with new vineyards in Cisterna d'Asti and Alba, developing the wine-growing family tradition in Langhe and Roero, under supervision of current owners: father Marco Piacentino with his wife Rosella, and sons Giulio and Lorenzo. Further to this, following the building of a new cellar in 2012, all grapes from all vineyards in the estate are now crushed under the same roof.

Barbaresco is a relatively small municipality and it is characterised by scattered houses and tiny hamlets, with a medieval tower as its landmark.
