More importantly, though, is the difference in mechanism of action between mineral sunscreens compared to conventional (chemical) ones. Minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide remain on the skin’s surface, creating a physical barrier on the skin and preventing UV-rays from penetrating the skin – it actually reflects the UV rays. In contrast, chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, allowing it to enter the skin where a chemical reaction takes place, converting the light rays into heat, which is then released from the skin.
