Made in 1885, this ruby and diamond five-stone ring is quintessentially Victorian and we simply love it! Set with three natural unheated Burmese rubies, elongated cushion-cut and perfectly matched in colour with a striking deep cerise hue with almost molten intensity. Rubies are stones that can fluoresce even under daylight in some cases, and these stones certainly feel like they're glowing. Claw-set and interspersed with cushion old mine-cut diamonds, two stacked above one another so as to give the impressive of a single larger stone. We love this little charming detail and the soft, romantic sparkle characteristic of antique hand-cut diamonds works perfectly here in this ring.
The diamonds have been set in silver, as platinum was not to be introduced for another twenty-five years or so. However, silver is known to tarnish over long periods of time and this is what has given the ring such an authentically antique look to it. We're obsessed!
This is an example of a carved half-hoop ring, hugely popular in the late Victorian period and characterised by their spread of gemstones and diamonds paired with ornate carved galleries and shoulders. The gallery is rich and beautifully hand-carved with scrolling volutes and foliate motifs. The shoulders are hand engraved and so refined - just such an expertly crafted ring carrying with it centuries of love.
Excellent: all stones are secure and well set, with no damage to the mount. Professionally polished and carefully inspected by our workshop, ready to wear and enjoy.
