Oscar Wilde was an Irish writer & poet who went on to become one of London’s most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Although remembered mainly for his epigrams & plays, Wilde had also written poetry & had written as a journalist. He was also involved in the then-fashionable philosophy of Aestheticism, which placed value on the pursuit of beauty & pleasure. He was renowned for his wit, conversation & flamboyancy. His aesthetic ideals are best realized in his only novel A Picture of Dorian Gray (1890).
He was drawn to drama because it enabled him to combine precise aesthetic ideas with wider social themes. He was arrested at the height of his fame as a dramatist during an anti-libel trial he had opened against the Marquess of Queensbury, which shed light on his homosexuality. He was sentenced to 2 years hard-labour in Reading Gaol & left for France after serving his time, never to return. He is most remembered for his play ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, widely regarded as his finest work.
